Day: Songwriting workshop with. Jez Lowe - and you could learn from no-one better. (WORKSHOPS)
Evening Concert: Jez Lowe. The Peter Pan of the folk world, Jez seems to have been around for ever, but like good wine, just gets better and better.  Jez hails from the North East, and many of his self-penned songs reflect that background, many with a subtle humour that leaves one giggling quietly to oneself at his clever use of words.  Either that, or he’ll be tearing at your heartstrings.  He’s toured all over the world, had his songs recorded by many other top artists including Fairport Convention and The Dubliners, yet still enjoys the intimacy of small gatherings such as ours.  It is a good reason for visitors to come to North Devon for Easter, and for locals to stay at home. www.jezlowe.com

Day: Song accompaniment workshop with. John Kirkpatrick. (WORKSHOPS)
Evening concert: John Kirkpatrick. John is widely acknowledged as the squeezebox king of English music, and an original and innovative player and accompanist.  With an outstanding voice and wide knowledge of English traditional song and music, he is also one of the cleverest songwriters around.  He has worked with some of the most prominent bands and figures in the folk and folk/rock scene: Steeleye Span, The Albion Band, Brass Monkey, Martin Carthy and Ashley Hutchings, to name but a few.  He has also worked in theatre and on radio for many years.  He now runs a dance band, Mr. Gubbins’ Bicycle, works with Chris Parkinson in Sultans of Squeeze, and still finds time to be involved with the Morris side he initiated, Shropshire Bedlams.  www.johnkirkpatrick.co.uk

Concert: Paul Downes. Paul’s sensitive and yet fun approach to his live performances puts him among the most respected artists on the British acoustic music scene.  He has been introduced (much to his embarrassment) as one of the greatest acoustic guitarists in the world.  It is easy to see why when you see the dazzling array of styles he performs with effortless brilliance, but at the same time he considers himself as a singer of songs, rather than a guitar technician.  With a rich musical background that has progressed through working with Phil Beer of Show of Hands, The Arizona Smoke Revue, Pete Seeger and, currently, The Joyce Gang, he has recorded eight albums with bands and three solo albums.  A great performance is in store! www.pauldownes.com

Concert: Pete CoeA popular return visit from a man who first came to the club as a visiting performer, and stunned everyone with his versatility in playing numerous instruments, along with a brilliant choice of songs, many with great choruses.  Pete seems to have been around forever, but continually reinvents himself, and now at over 60 seems to have an energy that puts many a younger performer to shame – well, how many do you know that sing, play and step-dance all at the same time?  With a tremendous knowledge and love of traditional songs from all over the English-speaking world, an ability to write relevant songs of his own, and interpret the songs of others, the variety that this man can pack into an evening is phenomenal! www.backshift.demon.co.uk/petehome.htm

Concert with Belshazzar’s Feast. Are they classical?  Are they folk?  Are they a category not even dreamed of yet by the reviewers?  The answer to all three questions is undoubtedly YES - and they're a lot more besidesPaul Sartin (Bellowhead, Faustus) on voice, fiddle and oboe plus Paul Hutchinson (Hoover the Dog) on voice and accordion have a perfect partnership.  You can listen to their music on the Web - note perfect and subtly nuanced - but it's not going to tell you the half of what you'll experience in concert because there are some things that you just can't bottle.  The humour in a look, a groan, a frantic flailing at a keyboard as the pace hots up and the partnership disintegrates into combat of an entirely musical kind.  And still it's note perfect... until it's not... and that's where the superb dexterity of these two amazing musicians really comes into its own.  A line of bum notes, perfectly timed between the two of them suddenly turns over the audience's perception and brings forth howls of laughter.  And was that really a measure of Hark the Herald Angels in the middle of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik?  The musical jokes whistle past your ears with lightning speed.  Another not to be missed evening! www.jacey-bedford.com/belshazzars.htm
